1765, John Smeaton is important in the history, rediscovery of, and development of moderncement, because he identified the compositional requirements needed to obtain "hydraulicity" in lime; work which led ultimately to the invention ofPortland cement. Portland cement led to the re-emergence ofconcreteas a modern building material, largely due to Smeaton's influence.
"Roman cement" was developed byJames Parkerin the 1780s, and finally patented in 1796. It was, in fact, nothing like any material used by the Romans, but was a "Natural cement" made by burningseptaria– nodules that are found in certain clay deposits, and that contain bothclay mineralsandcalcium carbonate.
1822, Foster, from British, develop a new kind of cement by mixing the chalk and clay as the raw material of the cement. It is the beginning of the modern cement making method. Thereafter, he got the patent of “British Cement”.
In 1824,Joseph Aspdinpatented a similar material, which he called Portland cement, because the render made from it was in color similar to the prestigiousPortland stone. The first cement to consistently contain alite was made by Joseph Aspdin's sonWilliamin the early 1840s. This was what we call today "modern" Portland cement and he established the importance ofsinteringthe mix in the”Bottle” kiln.
Isaac Charles Johnson, was born in London. He pioneered several innovations, including the production of low-water rawmix slurries, and new designs for kilns and industrial chimneys. 1872, he invent a new kiln for calcining the cement clinker in 3 stages (dry, burn, sinstering ) and got the patent hence.
The idea of calcining the cement clinker by rotary kiln comes up with the British, Keranston. Thus in 1877, he received the British patent.
In 1884, Dietzsch invent the vertical kiln.
1895,the American engineer Hurry and Simon make the idea that calcining by a rotary kiln come true. The new dry cavity rotary kiln was applied in the cement industry.
1897, Dor. I.A. Bachman invent the exhaust-heat boiler kiln.
1912, the F. L. Smith company invent the wet process rotary kiln.
1913, the Germany invent the mechanical shaft kiln.
1928, Dor.OHO Lellep invent the Lepol kiln.
1951, the Germany engineering F. Muller invent the first Suspension Preheater with tetra-cyclone in the world.
1971, Ishikawajima-Harima Heavy Industries invent the cement pre-calcining kiln, which is a significant breakthrough in the cement processing history.
